Baby quilts
For
centuries, loved ones have welcomed and cradled new babies in baby quilts.
These soft blankets have many purposes – they keep babies warm
and comfortable, they serve as babyhood mementoes and as loving gifts
for the infant recipients. Handmade baby quilts are a significant deal
of work for the quilter and truly a gift of love.
There are a few main types of baby quilts. These include:
• Tied quilts – the stitches in these type of quilts are
created by using thread or yard to “tie” or stitch a knot
or v-shaped stitch called a “crow’s foot” approximately
every four inches. This holds the batting in place and the quilt together.
• Hand-pieced quilts are made by sewing small pieces of fabric
into a pattern to make blocks and then sewing blocks together. These
may be quilted along the outer edges of shapes and in intricate patterns,
or they may be hand-tied.
• Machine quilted baby quilts can be either a solid quilt top
or a pieced top and then quilted on a large wooden frame with a machine
quilter.
Baby quilts make excellent gifts. These gifts often become cherished
security blankets or treasured heirlooms. Baby quilts are an excellent
way to express joy and love at the arrival of a new baby.
