Keepsake quilting

Keepsake quiltingConsider keepsake quilting to preserve you favorite old clothing by way of sewing pieces of them into a quilt. This type of quilt will help you recycle old favorites in a meaningful way. There are three main keepsake quilts that are commonly made. They are:

• Various pieces of old clothing – such as favorite childhood clothes that no longer fit and salvaged pieces from damaged or stained clothing. Cut out pieces of the fabric – squares are the easiest to work with if you are a novice and sew them together. You may create quilt blocks or just sew squares of fabric together, add batting and a fabric back and quilt it.
• Denim quilts are immensely popular. These can be made into just about any pattern, also it also works to just cut squares or strips of old jeans and sew them together. These can be done in the traditional style or made into “rag” or frayed quilts. Be sure to use a sturdy denim needle for this project.
• T-shirt quilts preserve that buttery softness that you love in old tees. One way to do this is by cutting out the logos or embellishments on the shirt in the same sized square shapes, sewing them together and attaching a back made from a knit fabric. You’ll want to cuddle up in this lightweight softness because it feels like a giant, cozy t-shirt.

Keepsake quilting helps you incorporate fabrics that have been a part of your life into quilts you and your family will cherish. This art is gaining popularity, as it can be a relatively simple quilt to make that carries in its stitches and fabrics memories of a lifetime.
