Quilting fabric

Quilting fabricQuilting fabric has expanded far beyond basic calico. You can find fabric to quilt with at all fabric stores and even in a few surprising places, such as your local super store. The availability and multitude of fabrics on the market today simplify the search for great quilting materials.

Quilting fabric is available in every color of the rainbow and in many color combinations. You can make a quilt from almost any fabric; however those that are most popular are cotton or cotton blends. These will hold up well, wash well and are comfortable on the skin. Some heavier quilts are made from flannel, fleece or denim for warmth.

To select fabric for a quilt, it is often best to buy it all at once in order to ensure that the combination looks good together. If you are purchasing the fabric separately, take along small samples of the other fabrics so that you can see what they look like together. For many quilters, choosing the quilting fabric is the first and most important step towards a beautiful finished quilt.
