Quilt for Change FAQs
How should I store quilts?
Store them in a relatively cool, dry place. The optimal temperature
is between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. It is best to wrap the quilts
in white muslin and store in acid-free cardboard or wooden boxes. Never
wrap or store them in plastic.
How can I purge excess quilting fabrics without simply throwing them
away?
You can organize a “fabric swap” where you and other quilters
you know get together to exchange fabrics. If you’re looking to
get rid of fabric without accumulating more fabric in the process, you
can donate it to humanitarian service projects that make quilts and
blankets for the needy.
What is a keepsake quilt?
A keepsake quilt is one that uses fabrics that have personal meaning
or history to the quilter or the recipient of the quilt. Some examples
are:
• Scrappy quilts are a mismatch type of quilt that uses old clothing,
such as baby clothes, costumes or favorite outfits.
• Denim quilts made from the good parts of worn out blue jeans
or
• T-shirt quilts are created by sewing squares of favorite t-shirts
together, usually centering logos or decorative embellishments on the
square.
• Necktie quilts incorporate discarded neckties arranged in a
pattern and sewn or appliquéd onto a quilt.
All of these keepsake quilts give the recipient a lasting piece of
their history. These quilts are great gifts that provide a sewn scrapbook
of sorts.
